U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - Register of private land claims investigated by the Board of Commissioners, 1805.

District land offices began setting up Boards of Commissioners in 1803 to investigate private land claims. The Boards gathered evidence, interrogated claimants and witnesses and rendered decisions based on their investigations. This volume contains a register of claims investigated in which it was determined that a patent was to be issued without payment of purchase money. Each entry includes the date the claim was entered, the number of the Commissioner's certificate, the date of the certificate, a notation of where the claim was recorded, the name of the person to whom the land was granted, the name of the authorized claimant, the number of acres allowed, the location of the land, where the original title was from (Spain or Occupancy), and the date of the order of the land survey. These records help illuminate the work of the Board of Commissioners in Ala. and may provide a cross-referencing tool to "Case files of private land claims investigated by the Board of Commissioners."
